譯後記 陸大鵬 賽門．蒙提費歐里的名字，關注世界史的中文讀者應當不陌生。他的《耶路撒冷三千年》是近年來罕見的歷史題材超級暢銷書，在中文世界如此，在全球亦是如此，被翻譯成四十幾種語言。作者企圖用七、八百頁的篇幅對耶路撒冷這座歷史文化名城的淵源與沿革做一番概覽（並且這三千年歷史涉及極複雜的歷史、民族、宗教和文化因素），可以說是野心勃勃。從全球數百萬讀者的熱烈反響來看，《耶路撒冷三千年》做為大眾歷史書籍取得的成功，是一座難以逾越的高牆。個人覺得，該書的厲害之處，一在強大的資料收集與分析，二在小說家一般娓娓道來的敘述能力和豐富的文學性。據說該書還將改編為《冰與火之歌》風格的電視劇，如果改編和拍攝水準不錯的話，我相信那一定是部值得期待的劇集。 喜歡看BBC紀錄片的朋友對蒙提費歐里的光頭、草帽、淺藍色襯衫、紅色運動鞋和渾厚霸氣的英國上流社會口音也不會陌生。他為BBC撰寫並主持了五部電視紀錄片，關於伊斯坦堡、耶路撒冷、羅馬、西班牙和維也納的歷史。 這位在劍橋大學獲得歷史學博士學位的歷史學家、傳記家和小說家，其實最拿手、最擅長的是俄國和蘇聯史，而無論耶路撒冷還是維也納都不是他的專長。他的俄國題材作品《葉卡捷琳娜大帝與波將金》、《史達林：紅色沙皇的宮廷》、《青年史達林》都斬獲若干大獎，長期盤踞全球暢銷書榜單。如今，一部與《耶路撒冷三千年》同樣汪洋恣肆而野心勃勃的巨著《沙皇時代：羅曼諾夫王朝三百年史》與中文讀者見面了。如《紐約時報》書評所說：「需要真正的歷史性勇氣才能寫這樣一個宏大的題材。」蒙提費歐里顯然不缺勇氣。 懂英文的朋友一看即知，Montefiore這個名字並非英語，而是義大利語。頂著這個義大利姓氏的蒙提費歐里出身英國一個著名的猶太人銀行業與外交官世家，其父系祖先是來自摩洛哥和義大利的塞法迪猶太人，其中不少成員一邊投注在個人的奮鬥，一邊則見證了歷史的演變。譬如摩西．蒙提費歐里爵士（1784-1885）是著名的金融家、慈善家和外交官，一八四○年拜見了鄂圖曼帝國蘇丹，還覲見過尼古拉一世和亞歷山大二世沙皇，力圖改善鄂圖曼與俄國境內猶太人的生存狀況。他七次訪問巴勒斯坦，於一八六○年建造了耶路撒冷舊城牆外第一個猶太人定居點；他還去過羅馬尼亞等國，慷慨解囊扶助當地的猶太人社區。在東歐、北非和黎凡特被壓迫的猶太人中，摩西爵士成為近乎神話的英雄。二○一七年十月，我在英國伯克郡採訪蒙提費歐里，他深情地講到自己的祖先摩西爵士，說這是他最早打算寫耶路撒冷歷史的機緣之一。 而他之所以很早開始對俄國歷史感興趣，一個重要原因也是他的家庭。他的外祖母是立陶宛猶太人，其家族在一八六三年為波蘭自由而戰，反抗沙俄，後逃亡到英國。他外祖父的家族在一九○四年的沙俄虐猶運動之後逃離俄國。他們在立陶宛買了去紐約的船票，後來大吃一驚地發現，船把他們送到了愛爾蘭。幫助他們逃亡的蛇頭解釋說，之前是答應把他們送到「新科克」（New Cork），不是「紐約」（New York）。一九一八年協約國武裝干預俄國革命時，蒙提費歐里的祖父時為英國陸軍上校，是占領喬治亞城市巴統的英國遠征軍的一員。蒙提費歐里說，自己家庭與俄國「這樣的關聯當然稀鬆平常，但它們能幫我把這段歷史寫得更有趣」。 在世界列國當中，俄國歷史應當說是中國人比較熟悉的部分，尤其是它的後半部分（十月革命一直到蘇聯解體）與中國歷史有著難解難分的關係。另外清末不少中國學人和政治家對彼得大帝感興趣，希望清朝皇帝也能像他一樣奮發圖強，成為強大的開明專制君主。康有為在〈應詔統籌全域折〉裡表示「若夫美、法民政，英、德憲法，地遠俗殊，變久跡絕，臣故請皇上以俄大彼得之心為法……。」葉卡捷琳娜大帝和末代沙皇都是中國人熟悉且津津樂道的話題。不過，完整講述整個羅曼諾夫王朝二十位沙皇與女皇（尤其是一些我們不太熟悉但仍然重要的帝王）故事的嚴肅著作，還比較鮮見。蒙提費歐里這部書是中文世界裡不錯的填補空白的綜述性作品。 但需要提醒大家的是，本書是家族史和傳記，不是俄國通史。三百多年裡史料浩如煙海，作者有自己的側重點和傾向。在採訪中他表示，要以專家學者的身分全面深入地了解俄國歷史，當然需要研究國民經濟、法律制度、軍事策略等方面，但他的目的不是寫一部給少數專家學者讀的大而周全（或者說大而無當）的俄國通史；他的聚焦點始終在人與人性上。所以本書裡不會有工業、農業生產的資料表格，也不會有陸、海軍部隊的詳細番號與調動紀錄，更不會有法律制度建設的細節。 但蒙提費歐里的書是第一部將個人與政治兩個層面融為一體的羅曼諾夫王朝史，運用了大量檔案和已出版的著作，大多是第一手材料，有的從未出版，很多刊登在十九世紀的歷史學期刊上。官方材料已經汗牛充棟，更不用說私人材料了。除了每一位沙皇海量的官方通信之外，大多數沙皇和重臣還有私人日記、回憶錄以及大量書信。亞歷山大二世與其情婦卡佳．多爾戈魯卡婭的通信多達三千封，絕大部分沒有公開過，很長時間裡被私人掌握，直到前不久才返還給俄國檔案館。蒙提費歐里專門赴俄研讀這些此前沒有被歷史學家用過的新材料。這些材料或許不會改變我們對歷史發展的定論，但能更好地幫助我們理解，沙皇們究竟是怎麼樣的人。 我覺得本書的一大鮮明特色就是，把歷代沙皇的人格、個性乃至癖好描摹得躍然紙上，彷彿是我們眼前有血有肉的活人。這些描摹都建立在紮實的檔案研究基礎上。本書英文版裡資料和檔案來源的部分就有密密麻麻的七十一頁之多。 在挖掘檔案的工作中，作者有一次驚險經歷，在勒福爾托沃宮（帝俄陸軍部的檔案館，史達林時代那附近就是令人膽寒的勒福爾托沃監獄）查資料時有一次從破爛的樓梯上摔了下來，好在沒有大礙。 有意思的是，不少珍貴的私人史料保存在英國王室手中，因為他們與羅曼諾夫家族是親戚。蒙提費歐里與英國王室關係不錯，得以從菲利普親王（伊莉莎白二世女王的丈夫）、威爾斯親王、麥可王子（女王的堂弟）等人那裡獲得寶貴資料，並且從他們那裡獲得一些其他途徑無從得到的個人回憶和知識。尤其麥可王子本人也是研究羅曼諾夫家族史的專家，在俄國也是知名人物。他與羅曼諾夫家族有血緣關係。一九七九年末代沙皇尼古拉二世一家的骸骨被發現，做DNA檢測時，就用了麥可王子的血樣。 蒙提費歐里為寫作本書而做的檔案工作固然令人欣喜，但光是蒐羅材料還不夠，還需要優美的文筆將材料組織起來。一個人同時是靠譜的研究者和優秀的文學家，這種例子雖然可以舉出不少，但仍然可算是難得。蒙提費歐里是不錯的小說家，他的歷史著作常常也有很強的文學色彩，大大提升了可讀性，位原本沉悶的檔案文獻賦予了一種魔力。蒙提費歐里的好友，另一位英國歷史學家安德魯．羅伯茲曾說：「偉大的歷史著作，也必須是偉大的文學著作。」蒙提費歐里的作品是否偉大，需要時間來評判，但現在至少可以說它妙趣橫生。 這裡值得引用一下享譽全球的普林斯頓大學歷史與國際關係教授史蒂芬．科特金在《華爾街日報》的評論：「本書精采紛呈，後三分之一的內容，從二十世紀初到革命的大動盪，特別令人眼花撩亂。……正如小說家將對話熔煉在一起，蒙提費歐里用回憶錄中的精妙引言來描寫末代沙皇每一個女兒的誕生。在王朝滅亡的宏偉詩篇中，蒙提費歐里入木三分地講述了拉斯普丁的陰謀詭計和他的遇害，以及一九一八年羅曼諾夫家族十八位成員被殺害的經過，震撼人心。…感謝蒙提費歐里的才華，今後羅曼諾夫王朝的統治將會顯得更加令人難以置信且更加讓人魂牽夢縈。」 本書不單單是歷史書和傳記，也關聯我們這個時代。蒙提費歐里曾是英國多家大報派駐俄國的通訊和戰地記者，在俄羅斯待過很長時間，報導過蘇聯解體及當時若干加盟共和國的武裝衝突。他對葉爾欽和普丁時代的俄國社會生活有第一手的敏銳觀察，對專制統治在俄國數百年的發展和在二十一世紀的新變化也有深刻的洞察。讀《沙皇時代》不單單是娛樂，不僅僅幫助我們了解過去，也有助於我們理解現今。另外我相信很多人會同意我，對中國人來講，俄國歷史是特別值得了解的。 我自己老早就是蒙提費歐里的粉絲，在《耶路撒冷三千年》英文版推出不久後就拜讀了，當時我還沒有開始從事歷史書的翻譯工作。記得當時讀這本書時我深深為其廣博和優美文筆所折服，覺得翻譯這樣一部時間跨度大、細節繁多、人物密集並且涉及多民族歷史文化的巨著一定是巨大的挑戰，也是值得驕傲的榮譽。五年後，我有幸成為甚至更為恢弘而淵博的《沙皇時代》的譯者，這是令我難忘的一段經歷。我認為這本書會是受過良好教育但非專家的廣大讀者，了解羅曼諾夫王朝和俄國歷史的一個很好的起點。

Apesar da quase exaustiva pormenorização dos factos e da preocupação obsessiva na citação das fontes, tenho alguma dificuldade em considerar esta livro uma obra de investigação e análise histórica na perspectiva "convencional" que se manifesta nos grandes "manuais" que estudei nos tempos da minha licenciatura, todavia quer porque o autor sabe "contar", quer porque a temática me interessa particularmente devorei este primeiro volume e já iniciei o seguinte. A não perder. Muito interessante mas sinto que a história dos Romanov seria interessante de qualquer maneira que fosse contada. Afinal, eu já passei boas horas de entretenimento simplesmente a ler a wikipedia acerca desta familia. Em relação a este livro específico, às vezes tornava-se um pouco seca, infelizmente!

本書在一開始的〈引言〉，我覺得作者所作出的統論挺精彩的，總評「莫斯科公國／俄羅斯帝國」的統治面貌。然而在正篇內容逐一讀下去之後，才發現本書的重點，幾乎可以說是專注在「宮鬥大全」呀！整個國家的政治軍事經濟發展與變遷，只在帝國王朝高層人士互相明爭暗鬥、與「生殖器連結（李敖語）」的大量篇幅之中，偶爾安插一下此時的國際大事記，除了彼得一世和瑞典查理鬥、葉卡捷琳娜二世派波將金打到黑海、亞歷山大一世和法國拿破崙鬥，有比較多的政軍記錄之外…… 雖然跟我預期的不太一樣，但本書讀來還是趣味十足的。

Luckily, I found these books (this one and the second volume) and it was one of my most rewarding purchases for me. This book goes from a little bit before the establishment of the Romanov dynasty up until Alexander I – covering around two hundred years of Russian
history. I was a big admirer of Peter, the Great, and Catherine, the Great. I was right to be so. They both had such a remarkable reign and, whether we agree with their attitudes or not, they were both charming and fearless. It is through these books that we found out why Russia is the way it is today. A lot of Russians behaviours, lifestyle and way of thinking come from its roots. The first volume is portrayed as the “Glory Days” as the second volume is portrayed as “The Downfall”. It is
through the first volume of these pair of books that the reader is able to understand why the last reigns were unsuccessful in a way that ruined any chance of the dynasty continuing longer than beyond Nicholas II. From reforms to monarchs’ behaviour, the “downfall” of the dynasty was coming. Thankfully, these books present you with facts – historical facts that will disgust and delight you as the reader goes through the pages. The way Simon Sebag Montefiore writes the book is very
engaging. More often than not, I found myself wanting to read more without putting the book down. He also added pictures of the most important things/people he figured would be important for the reader to know and I loved seeing the pictures and paintings of other times. I’m not a big fan of economic and financial areas, however, Simon Sebag Montefiore made it more interesting to learn about it – I still hate it, though. Basically, Montefiore’s writing and display of such historical facts is of
the most engaging and compelling I’ve had the pleasure to read. The only reason why I don’t give it 5 stars is exactly because of the amount of economy and financial issues are portrayed in the books which lead me to not be so eager to read sometimes. It wasn’t because of Montefiore’s writing or structure – it was probably the only reason I actually got through it – but because, even though it was extremely necessary for the reader to understand the financial and economic impacts,
policies, reforms and ideas that were being made and thought at the time, it was the area I hated most. It is an amazing book that deserves more hype that it gets.
O primeiro volume é um grande trabalho de investigação do autor. Sem espinhas! Conseguir escrever um texto fluído num enredo gigantesco que nos arrasta em nomes com imensas sílabas será sempre uma
tarefa ingrata e (quase) utópica. Apesar da passagem por Pedro e Catarina, destaco neste primeiro volume o papel de Alexandre na vitória da Europa contra Bonaparte.
Finalmente, uma análise completa da dinastia russa mais famosa. Estes livros são de fácil leitura, embora as páginas sejam muitas. Sem se perder em pormenores supérfluos, e não deixando de comparar com os regimes russos dos séculos XX e XXI, o autor consegue manter o interesse do início ao fim, sempre bem humorado e lúcido.
